Next day after my LWFD training I tried hammerthrowing. I expected a no go from my shoulder, but...wonder..it worked. I did about 10 throws with the best throw of 62 feet with the 22 lbs hammer (I have only one hammer). Not bad at all. Also altered my technique here after tips from fellow throwers and using my blade shoe for stability. Try to accelerate the hammer and stretch the arms. Shoulder is still wacky and I can't do too much. So far so good.

During my second competiton which was much better than the first, I got ill for two weeks.
My body could not handle the stress properly. Nevertheless my throwing was improved. Thanks to the Stegeman brothers for getting me back in basic shape. Then I resumed training and 4 weeks ago I got a shoulderproblem, an old issue rotator cuff. Yesterday I took the risk and did some LWFD. I did about 10 throws and was surprised that the shoulder did not give me too much problems. Distance 13.50 - 14.20. During my shoulder pause I trained a new technique without weight and with very light weight. Matt Vincent has very good training movies in slowmo so you can scrutinize the movement. After applying this technique in my own throwing my throws ended in the middle of the trig. You need that for a scottish trig, otherwise you have problems with your feet displaced. I'm still not there but I'm happy that I can throw with my shoulder. This week I'll try hammer. Not competing in Scotland is no option. We'll see. Today after not much sleeping, I had a party last night, with some (and more) drinks, I trained in perfect weather conditions, Total of 30 throws with light WFD, 5 of them over 44 feet with 44.5 the best. All of them correct throws in the trig. Then it was over, hit the wall. Still some feet away from more than 52 feet in training in 2011. I have to be patience but know that training is precious. MWC is just 3,5 months away. Then some Stoneput, experimenting with hand and elbow, no distance measured, just trying to find the groove. This week also some squatting and deadlifting in the gym, try to regain some of my lost bodyweight. I did not excercise these for two years. So combined with muscle stiffness and deprivation of sleep my body felt sluggish. No problem, training in general is improving.
Last weekend was my first competition in two years, my preparation was very short. Fact is also I lost much weight, about 30 lbs,
in these two years. I only trained WFD for a couple of weeks, I hoped to throw over 44 feet but it was only about 38 feet. Could not turn fast, weather conditions were very bad. The other competitors had also problems, no records were broken under this conditions. I did not touch any caber for two years so picking up a massive, slippery caber on a flooded field and even toss it (50 degrees) was not that bad, I think. In contrast to the caber and WFD events, the stone put, hammerthrow and WOB were below any standard. The only advantage is that after this disappointing competition (for me) things can get only better. Juist another training on a very flooded field. I had not the right shoes for this condition. Nevertheless I was very pleased with this training. I corrected some arm movement and it paid out right away, Very small detail but a foot or so extra. WFD (30 lbs) around 44 feet, I decided not to remove the extra weight, should give advantage in competition.
Also better control with the stone, speed and arm stretch is coming to a point. This was a short training, no more 90 throws for WFD and another 80 for stone as I did in the past....Throwing is now done routinely, every drill and turn is the same and the outcome (the distance) is predictable. Today some WFD and Stone put. No distance recorded, the trainingsground was flooded with water. Stiff and sore muscles. Only a few days for my first competition since september 2012.
Just throwing for fun on my new field, big enough to throw the hammer. The WFD is 30 lbs, I have to remove some links to adjust the weight..... First fieldtraining since a year and a half. In my first training with WFD and WFH I get my feet wet. .....Due to the weather and field condition it was very difficult to throw with technique. I did not measure any distance, I was just glad to be there and throw the weights. I missed it very much.
One of my former trainingsbuddies, age 53, was not so lucky as I was a few months ago. He suffered from hypertension and today I heard he was hospitalized and put in coma after a stroke. His readers were about 170/140.... so I'm damn lucky... .
Rian preparing for the squat My traningspartner Rian Laarman won the the Dutch Nationals Powerlifing in the under 83 kilo class. Outstanding as he did it without gear. His deadlift of 240 kilo raw is also a new Dutch record. Kolja did not enter the competition and I think he should have with his raw monster deadlift. Pity I cannot train heavy with these young guys at the moment. For myself I'm down to 108 kilo and my bloodpressure is down to 135/78. That's good.. but it is due to heavy medicine. My trainer Deiana wants me this year heavily on aerobic training (running, biking, rowing etc.) to keep it down and prepare for 2014. I should be fast instead of slow. Health comes in first! |
