Masters World Championships 2017 (Iceland)
Hall of Fame inductees Larry Sisseck (USA), Al Stagner (USA) and Mark Buchanan (USA) were honered last weekend in Iceland. Congrats gentlemen!
The competition
In a very competitive men's class 40 - 44 Andrew Kirchen (USA) took the title. Rob Meulenberg was runner-up and Joe Hall took third.
What was promising to be one of the most exciting events, the men's class 45 - 49 turned in an epic battle between Michael Dickens (USA) and Dutch Hans Lolkema. Almost every event Mike inched Hans out, except for Light Hammer. With a personal record with the light WFD Mike was the best man in this years World Championships. Consistent throwing in every event rewarded him the World title for the fourth time!
Hans Lolkema settles for 2nd place. A fantastic result for the best master of the Netherlands! Congrats to Hans.
To get some perspective on the achievement of Michael Dickens is to consider the placings from Jason Young (Scotland) 4th place and Andreas Deuschle (Germany) 6th! Jason had a 'No throw' so that cost him valuable points. German Uli Müller took 9th place.
Wybe Zeilstra (the Netherlands) took 15th place and could not crack the top 10 this year.
Class men 50 - 54 was won by fomer World champion Berle Conrad. In second place a very strong Brent Abbott and Thom Van Vleck came in 5th.
The class 55 -59 offered an interesting duel between Mark MacDonald and Hans Dieter Dorow. After Hans leading in day one, Mark was able to reverse this lead the following day. Mark won his class and took the World title for the fourth time home to Scotland! Dale Gehman came in third and had an very good Light Weight for Distance with 58 feet and 35 inches.
German Jurgen Stickelbrock was a solid fourth and showed that the Germans are by now a force to reckon with in Highland Games.
Frank Henry was again crowned as world champion (class 60 -64), with former world champion Mark Buchanan in 2nd place. Title record holder Bill Leffler was third. Good old Al Stagner came in fifth.
Lightweight class < 50 was won by Mark Howe (USA), second place was for Petrus Sundevall(Sweden) and third place for Torsten Hülsemann (Germany)
Hanshugo Suerth (Germany) emerged again as winner in the class men 70 - 79.
Womens class 40 - 44 was won by Sylvana Bomholt, yes again form Germany!
