January 2 - The 142nd annual Waipu Highland Games, the first in the new year, was won again by New Zealander Pat Hellier. He won this contest for the 18th consecutive time! After the competition he announced his retirement at 41 years of age. Pat won the world caber-tossing championship (Edinburgh, Scotland) in 2009.
