In MWC 2013 this spinning technique will be allowed in competition.Thom van Vleck, who descended from Dutch ancestors, competes in the 40 - 49 Masters age class. We wish Thom success with this major competition!
October 10 - Inverness
Some impressive figures. The economic impact to Inverness (Scotland) of the 2006 Masters Highland Games World Championships was in excess of one million pounds!
In 2014 the Scottish Government and EventScotland will prepare for year long celebrations which are planned to mark the 700th Anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn (Blàr Allt a' Bhonnaich). Of course Highland Games will be part of these celebrations.
This battle of Bannockburn (1314) was fought on a field near well-known Stirling and its significance is undisputed. Scottish army under King Robert I the Bruce defeated the English King Edward II, in the most crucial event of the wars of Scottish independence.
The Scots army was outnumbered almost three to one. King Edward had more than 2000 knights to King Bruce’s 500 horsemen. And 6000 Scots foot soldiers faced Edward’s force of almost 16,000 infantry.
The Scots had to overcome this disadvantage and used the natural scottish terrain to counter the threat of Edward’s enormous cavalry and dug small pit
traps to defend their flanks. It was, as turned out, a very wise decision.
October 14 - Masters World Championships 2014
Started as proposal in 2012 it's finally confirmed, the Masters World Championships will take place on the 2nd weekend of September 2014. This weekend being the traditional date for the Northern Meeting Highland Games. 2014 MWC will be held over two days. Special thanks Gerry Reynolds and Kevin Rogers for bringing this championship back to Scotland!
