May 2 - Masters Competitors for Highland Games (Winsum, Friesland) May 12th are:
- Wulbert Stam
- Wybe Zeilstra
- Harry Bergsma (not confirmed)
- Godfried Kleinmeijer
Hans Lolkema (Pro and a master) is throwing non-competitive, being a Pro and using this contest as warming up for his international competiton. This was the only competition in the Netherlands hosting the sheaf toss.
A week later there's the international competition in Kamen (Germany) with Dutch compettiors in the masters class Gert Stegeman and Godfried Kleinmeijer.
May 7 - The first Masters World team Cup for Highland Games (May 5th) was won by team Scotland!
1. Scotland: Mark McDonald and Malcolm Cleghorn
2. Canada: Warren Trask and Kevin Fast
3. Germany : Uli Müller and Manfred Mühlenhaus
4. Switzerland: Alf Grasnick and Anthony Lordi
5. France: Belkacem Sahim and Christophe Garault
In the A class the masters Bernd Wolff (Germany) placed 6th and Gert Stegeman (Netherlands) took 8th place.
May 13 - Wulbert Stam emerges as winner in Winsum.
Highland Games competittion in the Netherlands started with the competition in Winsum (Friesland). In the masters class Wulbert Stam won almost every event and threw a personal record with the 28 lbs WFD 58'20" (17.74 meter)! Defending champion Wybe Zeilstra threw also a personal record with the light hammer and won the Braemar stone by a few inches but could not stop Wulbert Stam from winning, and took second place. Godfried Kleinmeijer, whose performance was hampered by shoulder and knee problems, took third place and could not throw a personal record, although his light hammer came close.
Congrats, well done, Wulbert.
May 19 - Top competitors in Kamen. Hans Lolkema wins A- heavies. In a very strong field Hans Lolkema wins for German Daniel Dorow and American Larry Brock jr. Hans was the only person to toss the monster caber and easily won the the light WFD with over 25 meters. In the masters class professionals Andy Deuschle, Hans Dieter Dorow and Uli Müller were battling for first place. Competitors of Germany, Switzerland, Scotland, New Zealand and the Netherlands competed for top honors. Andy threw 5.20 meters with the WOB. At the end of the day Andy Deuschle took home the beacon. Heavy hammer was 12 kilograms and the light hammer was thrown over 35 meters by the masters. Also Andy was the only master athlete to toss the 6 meter caber although Gert Stegeman came close.
At the start of the games there was a moment of silence to remember Stephen Aitken (aged 45) who died tragically last week. Stephen was one of the leading international highland games ahtletes.
May 21 - Dutch competition in Dordrecht, Stam keeps first place.
Wulbert Stam and Wybe Zeilstra had excellent performances at this year’s games in Dordrecht May 19 and 20. Wulbert was the overall winner of the master class.
